Why This Stage Is So Sensitive

 

In the earliest years, children’s brains develop through sleep, repetition, movement, and human connection. Screens interrupt all four.

 

Sleep & Brain Development

• Even small amounts of screen exposure can disrupt sleep cycles

• Poor sleep affects emotional regulation, language development, and attention

• A tired brain is more reactive and harder to soothe

 

Attention & Concentration

• Fast‑moving visuals condition the brain to expect constant stimulation

• This makes it harder for toddlers to engage with slower, real‑world experiences

 

Social & Emotional Development

• Toddlers learn by watching faces, tone, and body language

• Screens replace these cues with artificial ones

 

What to Do (Baby Steps)

• Prioritize sleep routines over screen convenience

• Replace screen soothing with physical comfort and repetition

• Keep screens rare and calm, not stimulating

 

What NOT to Do

• Do not punish or “remove” screens suddenly if already used

• Do not expect overnight change — small reductions matter
